Tree planting - get involved

Monday, 22 January 2024
Help to offset the emissions generated by BUCS Big Wednesday.

This initiative started in 2022 with a hedgerow planted at the university's Riverside Sports Complex.

Planting has previously been carried out by university sports teams in collaboration with the Grounds team, however everyone is welcome and food is provided! Together we can make a positive impact on our community and ecosystem.

How do I get involved?

Join us on Saturday 27 January from 10.30am

We will provide all the necessary tools, including gloves, spades and shovels. Please bring weather-appropriate clothing that you won’t mind getting dirty and sturdy footwear.

To register your interest, send your name via email to Sean Nolan.

Why get involved?

Planting hedgerows is as important as planting trees for tackling the climate and nature crisis. Hedges are the most widespread semi-natural habitat in the UK, supporting a large diversity of flora and fauna. They are a valuable refuse and food source for wildlife and provide a green corridor of connected habitats.

Species to be planted as part of this project include: hawthorn, holly, field maple, crab apple, rowan and dog rose. Wildflower seed will also be sown to create further foraging for insects and animals.

With additional funding from Severn Trent Water’s Biodiversity Boost initiative, our goal over the next two years is to plant a further 3,446 trees and whips to extend this native, species-rich hedgerow at the edge of some of Nottingham’s large industrial areas.
