The Advanced Materials research group is investigating novel materials manufacturing, processing, and characterisation. Working across sectors including energy, healthcare, aerospace, and automotive, we have expertise in biomaterials, energy materials, microwave process engineering, and surface and interface engineering.

The Buildings, Energy and Environment research group focuses on reducing energy use in the built environment, mitigating the impacts of climate change on buildings, and enhancing the well-being and productivity of building users. With expertise in sustainable building design, energy technologies, urban living, and smart and innovative materials, we aim to inform the sustainable practice of buildings and engineering.

The Fluids and Thermal Engineering research group focuses on understanding fluid flow phenomena with expertise in experimental fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, two-phase flow, heat transfer enhancement, and thermodynamics. We work across a range of industrial applications including flow assurance and control, engines and combustion, refrigeration and air-conditioning, and industrial chemical processes. 

The Food, Water, Waste research group aims to deliver sustainable and resilient solutions to address food, water and resource security. With expertise in wastewater treatment and reuse, advanced processing technologies, appropriate and sustainable design, waste and resource management, and sensors, analytics and modelling, we work across a range of sectors including food, bio-products, waste management, water and agriculture. 

The GeoEnergy Research Centre (GERC) address the global energy supply trilemma of affordability, security and sustainability. A joint centre with the British Geological Survey, the GERC undertakes research into subsurface energy processes specifically fluid-rock interactions, sensor development and demonstration of monitoring technologies. 

The Low Carbon Energy and Resources Technologies research group is investigating new, innovative methods to decarbonise energy and heat supplies across the domestic and industrial sectors. With expertise in carbon dioxide capture technologies, biomass thermochemical conversion, cleaner coal technologies, petroleum geochemistry, and smart materials for energy efficient buildings, we aim to accelerate the development of low carbon energy. 

The Mechanical and Aerospace Systems research group develops new technologies and analysis methods to provide the engineering validation and verification for mechanical and aerospace systems. With expertise in machine dynamics, materials behaviour, solid mechanics, thermofluids, and machine learning we aim to enable sustainable, clean energy and decarbonised transport. 

Nottingham Drives Specialist Services (NDSS) is an independent business unit wholly owned by the University of Nottingham. Working closely with industry, NDSS delivers services to support the industrialisation of power electronic converters, electrical machines and drives across the automotive, aerospace, industrial, marine, rail, and energy sectors. 

The internationally renowned Power Electronics, Machines and Control research group is the world’s largest group of electrification researchers. Working across sectors including automotive, rail, marine and aerospace, we have expertise in power electronic systems, electrical machines, electric motor drives and systems, and power electronic integration. Housed in the purpose-built £40m Power Electronics and Machines Centre with unrivalled industry-leading facilities, we are prototyping novel electrification technologies at speed and scale.  

The Resilience Engineering research group focuses on developing modelling techniques to predict ways of improving the design, maintenance, and operation of engineering systems to reduce the frequency and consequences of failure. Working across sectors including transport, energy production and distribution, utilities, and communications we have expertise in risk and reliability, asset management, and system complexity.
