Elizabeth Goddard, SU Education Officer, presents the Oscar for Best School to Julie Sanders, Head of the School of English
The School of English has won the Oscar for 'Best School/Department' in the University Staff Oscars. The nomination included examples of how English has actively improved the university experience for its students.
Elizabeth Goddard, Education Officer at the Students Union, explained why the school stood out:
'The School is very responsive to its Learning Community Forum, introducing video feedback and organising academic skills workshops. The School took the initiative to change the name from English Studies, after full consultation with students.
'We particularly liked details of what English does for international students, holding an international day and introducing a buddy system for Ningbo students.
'Finally, the nomination commends the School’s excellent management, something which most students would be unlikely to consider or particularly notice, demonstrating that the interaction between academic and administrative staff must be very effective.
Overall, the nomination really gave a sense that students truly loved being part of such a responsive School, constantly striving to make improvements.'
Among several individual members of teaching staff in the School who were nominated for other awards, we’re delighted Paul Whickman one of our Postgraduate Teaching Fellows won the award for Best Postgraduate who Teaches - a terrific achievement.
The University Staff Oscars – sponsored by The University of Nottingham (Teaching & Learning Board) – are awarded annually by the University’s Student Union and each entrant is nominated by students.
