PhD applications invited for the Cambridge and Nottingham Corpus Development Scholarship

Applications are invited for a three-year funded full-time PhD studentship in the School of English Studies at The University of Nottingham. The research project involves work on the collection of the Cambridge and Nottingham Vocational English Corpus (CANVEC) and research into processes of corpus analysis and development involving spoken and written English in health, legal and business communication, with the longer term aim of informing ELT course materials to be developed by Cambridge University Press. The research will be supervised by Professor Svenja Adolphs and Professor Ronald Carter.

The studentship covers full Home/EU course fees for three years (£3,466 p.a. at current rates). The successful candidate may be considered for limited paid teaching and/or administrative duties in the School after successful completion of the first year of research. The closing date for applications is 1 September 2010, with interviews held in mid-September with a preferred start date of 1 January 2011 or earlier, if possible.

The successful candidate will be based in CRAL (Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics) — one of the most successful research units in the country. For details about CRAL, its projects in corpus linguistics and a wide range of other applied linguistics research see here. Informal enquires about the studentship, as well as full applications including a letter of suitability, CV and names of two academic referees, may be made by email only to: Ronald.Carter@nottingham.ac.uk .
