Honorary Research Fellow,
I completed my AHRC-funded doctoral thesis, A Cognitive Grammar of Mind Style in Speculative Fiction, at the University of Nottingham in 2015. I have since worked as a Lecturer in Stylistics at the University of Nottingham and Senior Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Huddersfield, where I taught descriptive linguistics, stylistics and cognitive linguistics. I was appointed Honorary Research Fellow in the School of English at the University of Nottingham in 2022. My research centres in cognitive stylistics and applications of cognitive linguistic frameworks to the analysis of discourse in different contexts. I am author of Mind Style and Cognitive Grammar (2018, Bloomsbury) and co-editor of two volumes: New Directions in Cognitive Grammar and Style (2021, Bloomsbury) and Cognitive Grammar in Literature (2014, John Benjamins).
My research draws on cognitive linguistic frameworks such as Cognitive Grammar and Text World Theory in order to enrich the analysis of other minds (or 'mind style') in both literary and non-literary texts. My research draws on quantitative and qualitative analysis of reader responses to inform our understanding of what happens when we read. I am interested in how such empirical data can be used to inform and interrogate the accounts of textual interpretation offered by cognitive stylistics.
Most recently, I have begun to examine the ways in which cognitive linguistics might help up to understand the way language is experienced in contexts relating to health communication.
