Corpus linguistics provides methods for the study of collections of electronic texts (including literary texts, archive material, media articles, material from the internet, transcripts of spoken communication, etc).

This module will explore fundamental concepts and analytical methods in the field of corpus linguistics and give students the opportunity to complete hands-on tasks using corpus software such as Sketch Engine.

Methodologically, the module combines qualitative discourse analysis with quantitative approaches to large datasets. While there is a statistical element to the module, you do not need existing experience of quantitative research methods.

Please note, this is an interdisciplinary module that is open to students from across the social sciences. If you have any doubts about whether the course is suitable for your needs or level of study, please contact the module convenor before registering.
