The Midlands Graduate School (MGS) is a collaborative venture, led by University of Warwick, in partnership with the universities of Aston, Birmingham, De Montfort, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Nottingham Trent.
The consortium is a Doctoral Training Partnership in the ESRC DTP network, supporting the next generation of excellence in Social Science. It welcomed its first cohort of scholarship students in October 2017 and was renewed by ESRC in 2023.
Each year there are two types of competitions for ESRC funded studentships
1. Open competition
This is where a candidate applies with a research project in mind. The deadline is normally in January.
2. Strategic Joint & Collaborative competition
This is where a candidate applied to an advertised project proposed by academic supervisors. These projects are normally advertised in February.
