What happens if you don't pay 2024/25
These are fee regulations which describe what may happen if you do not pay your fees.
1.1
If you do not pay your tuition fees, or any other tuition fee related sums due to the University one or more of the following academic sanctions may be applied:
- You may have your access to IT and Library facilities restricted
- You may not be allowed to continue with your course, or to attend any lectures or classes or to take any examinations
- Your registration status may be interrupted; during this interruption of studies, you will not be entitled to any service from the University; you can only have your registration reinstated when the outstanding tuition fees or other tuition fee related sums are paid in full and at a time agreed by the University as suitable for your course
- You may not be allowed to graduate and/or receive your award; in order to graduate, all fees and other study-related sums must have been paid in full (at least three weeks) prior to the date of graduation
- You may not be allowed automatically to register or re-register for any academic year
- You may not be eligible automatically to receive the benefits of any fellowship, studentship, scholarship, bursary or prize awarded to you by the University
- You may not be made any offer of a place on any course at the University
1.2
Tuition fee related sums include:
- tuition fees
- reassessment fees
- fees for examinations or re-examinations taking place outside the UK
- extension fees
- late submission fees
- resubmission fees
- charges for compulsory field trips
- late payment fee for tuition fees
- tuition fee payment plan administration charge
- exam resit fee
- thesis pending fees
- any other fees or charges related to your tuition fees
If you do not pay your accommodation fees or any other accommodation related sums due to the University, one or more of the following sanctions may be applied:
- You may not be allocated University accommodation as a returning student
- You may be evicted from your room
- The University may apply a late payment charge
- The University may pass unpaid charges or fees to a third-party debt collection agency
- The University may pass the unpaid charges or fees to firm of solicitors
- The University may apply to the courts for a county court judgment (CCJ)
Accommodation related sums include:
- accommodation charges
- accommodation storage charges
- placement accommodation charges
- accommodation payment plan administration charge
- late payment fee for accommodation charges
- discipline fines relating to your accommodation
- any other fees or charges relating to your University accommodation
1.3
If you do not pay any other non-tuition fee related sums due to the University, one or more of the following non-academic sanctions may be applied:
- The University may apply a late payment charge
- The University may pass unpaid charges or fees to a third-party debt collection agency
- The University may pass the unpaid charges or fees to a firm of solicitors
- The University may apply to the courts for a county court judgment (CCJ)
Non-tuition fee related sums include:
- overpayment of a stipend
- overpayment of a bursary
- crisis loan
- cost of replacement of library books
- library fines
- discipline fines not related to your accommodation
- any other non-tuition fees or charges relating to your time at the University
1.4
If more than a calendar year has passed since the date of your interruption of studies or non-registration under these regulations, the University will not guarantee your re-admission to the course. In order to return you must pay the tuition fees or other tuition fee related sums due in full and obtain permission to re-register through the Admissions Office. You may only re-register at the beginning of an academic year.
1.5
The Registrar or their nominee may, in the light of your individual circumstances, decide that some or all of the sanctions listed above will not be applied.
1.6
If any of these sanctions for debt are applied, you may appeal in writing, within 10 working days of the final demand, to the Registrar.
1.7
The University reserves the right to take reasonable steps to recover all fees due and also any fees, charges or legal costs incurred in that recovery action.
1.8
A debt to any campus of the University, including the campuses outside of the UK, will be considered as a debt to the University.
1.9
If you are a returning international student seeking a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number from the University and you have previously failed to pay your tuition fees on time (that is, by the date given on your fees invoice), the University may ask you to pay a proportion of your next year’s tuition fees in advance before a CAS number is issued. If you are an international applicant requiring a CAS number and you have not paid your tuition fees or any other tuition fee related sums, a CAS number will not be issued until such time as this debt is cleared.
