What made you choose to study geography at the University?
The ability to choose both human and physical modules during first, second and third year of study. This degree of flexibility has allowed me to tailor the degree to suit my interests which were split between the two areas of geography.
What skills did you acquire during this time?
I’ve learned how to conduct various statistical analyses on large sets of data, create maps, write research papers but most of all I have acquired excellent people skills through working together with other students on group coursework tasks.
What are your fondest memories from your time at the school?
Perhaps the fondest memory is the third year fieldtrip to Liguria where me and my friends conducted research on fruit trees and their associated uses within the region. We have met a lot of welcoming and kind people which made you more appreciative of the cultures around the world.
Where are you working now and what does the role involve?
My role within Proman UK is to manage and develop existing and new client contracts. Currently I am in charge of a workforce of 200 workers and manage a team of four supervisors on a daily basis. My day to day duties involve monitoring performance as well as ensuring all targets and client expectations are met.
What advice would you give to someone considering following a similar career path?
If anyone is considering working away from home for long periods of time needs to realise the scale and extent of the commitment made. Weigh up all the pros and cons of living away and then make an informed decision – do not rush into anything!
