This course considers:
- The need for measurement within healthcare improvement activities
- The steps that might be taken to develop robust measurement plans for improvement projects
- The range of tools and techniques which can help in developing such plans
- The application of measurement within specific topic areas within quality and safety improvement
- Define the role of the reflexive and discriminating use of measurement in the process of improvement, recognising the variety of quality improvement strategies available
- Develop a critical understanding of the variety and applicability of measurement techniques available, as an integrated element of quality improvement initiatives
- Understand the nature of measurement as a contextual social practice and the range of influences that affect the measurement process
- Propose a comprehensive, resilient and reliable measurement plan for improvement initiatives
- Analyse improvement measures to appropriately recognise normal and special cause variation in clinical processes and accurately guide further improvement efforts
- Apply the principles of evaluation in a business case, recognising the contextual and cultural characteristics of the setting of the improvement, developing creative solutions to issues arising
