This course considers:
- The strategic and operational structures and approaches to risk and its management at the organisational and policy level
- The social, political and cultural dynamics of organising and managing for safety, including the role of regulatory bodies and patient-public involvement in guiding and governance of system change
- Concepts and methods of organisational learning and change along with monitoring and implementing improvement
- The concept of organisational and professional culture in relation to safety and improvement
- The utilisation and challenges of quality improvement when located in a systems context
- Critically analyse how organisations assess and manage risk and deal with organisational failures
- Assess the strategies used for effective governance of quality and patient safety and appraise their implementation in various settings
- Discuss the impact that engaging patients can have on improvement strategies and assess the approaches used to engage patients in these efforts
- Explore the role of regulators, commissioners and other professional bodies in monitoring and guiding system change
- Assess the characteristics of high performing healthcare systems and judge the effectiveness of current systems in adopting and implementing these strategies
- Understand the role and effectiveness of safety cases in guiding system changes
