Dr Fern Todhunter wins scientific prize at the 2016 Nursing Informatics Conference in Geneva

Dr Fern Todhunter has won first prize for 'Best Scientific Poster' at the 13th International Congress in Nursing Informatics, held in Geneva, receiving 400 Swiss Francs and a certificate. This year's conference theme was 'eHealth for all, entry level collaboration – from project to realization'.

The conference welcomed approximately 1000 nurses and medical professionals from across the globe, offering the chance to find out about latest scientific discoveries, network and engage in debate with others in the field.

Fern's winning poster was entitled 'Social media and population health virtual exchange for senior nursing students: An international collaboration', and colleagues from Sheffield, the USA and New Zealand collected the award on Fern’s behalf.

The Conference attracted entries from 40 countries with 445 submissions for papers, posters, short communications, panels, workshops, demonstrations, student competitions and tutorials. Each submission was reviewed by three reviewers from a scientific committee of 963 experts.

Fern said: "The award is one outcome from an ongoing and enjoyable collaboration with colleagues at Sheffield Hallam University and the Universities of Texas and Auckland. We have regular Skype chats about our common interests in e-learning, the student experience and the impact of big data in health.

Big data encompasses the voluminous amounts of information which nursing and other professions can tap into about health in local and global contexts. We created a closed Facebook site for student nurses from each University to chat about their respective population’s health. By connecting the big data context with social media, this was a unique and innovative learning experience for student nurses from different parts of the globe."

Congratulations on your achievement, Fern!
