Rocio Fernandez-Mendez has been awarded the ‘Young Investigator Award’ at the last world congress of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine in Seoul, South Korea. Rocio attended the event from 29th August to 1st September 2015 where she presented her study and received the award for her innovative research which comprises a retrospective study about the practice of glycaemic control of stress hyperglycaemia in adult Intensive Care Units of seven NHS hospitals. The GlyCon study aims to increase the evidence about the most effective and safest targets and methods of glycaemic control in intensive care, which are questions that still remain unanswered at the international level.
The World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM) was established in 1977 and is a membership organization comprised of National Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine. The principle objective of the World Federation is to promote the highest standards of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine for all mankind, without discrimination.
Rocio said: “This award means a lot to me and I feel very grateful to the Federation for this. It recognises the relevance of GlyCon study, which I am conducting as part of my PhD, and it acknowledges the strong potential of nursing-led research for the continuous improvement of high quality, evidence-based practice.”
