Between 15-17 September 2016, The Division of Midwifery hosted academics and student midwives from Karlsruhe, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark, one of our Erasmus+ partners.
The purpose of the visit was to engage in a short study tour that included attendance at the Annual Midwifery Society Conference, held in the Medical School, which had chosen ‘Salutogenesis’ as this year's theme. This refers to an approach which focuses on factors that support health and wellbeing, rather than factors that cause disease. Visiting Student Midwives also contributed to the conference poster competition.
The visiting student midwives also attended presentations about midwifery care within the UK and took part in a normal birth workshop. In addition, as the City of Nottingham is twinned with Karlsruhe, the Lord Mayor of Nottingham hosted a reception for the German delegation at the Town Hall.
It is hoped that a return study tour can be organised, to enable Nottingham student midwives to visit either Copenhagen or Karlsruhe.
Many thanks go to Sara Borrelli, Associate Teacher, for her support in organising the event, and the Committee of The University of Nottingham Midwifery Society for inviting the European student midwives to the conference.
