Finding the information
When you reference a journal, you need to ensure the accuracy of the reference so that anyone can locate the material you have used.
You can find all the information you need either in the contents section of the journal, or the first page of the article itself.
In-text referencing
Author
When you write the author's name, always begin with the surname, followed by a comma and then any initials. Complete the author's name with a full-stop.
Date
The date can normally be found at the top of the first page of the article or within the contents page.
When forming a reference, enclose the date in brackets.
Title
Make sure you always use the full title. If there is a subtitle, use a colon to separate this from the main title. The full title is written in bold and should be completed with a full stop.
Journal name
The journal's name will appear on the front cover of the journal. Also it can usually be found on the first page of the article or within the contents page. It should be written in bold. Do not use a full-stop at its end.
Volume & journal number
The volume and journal number are usually quoted near to the date. When forming a reference, the volume and part number are usually quoted near to the date. When forming a reference the part number is placed in brackets. Volume and part numbers are followed by a colon.
Page numbers
Finally, you need to add the page numbers. These refer to first and last pages of the journal article. Make sure you separate these from the volume and journal number with a space.
Complete with a full-stop.
