Understanding ADHD

7. Impulsivity

Individuals with ADHD often act before they think and find it difficult to stop themselves from doing things. Individuals with impulsive tendencies can be reckless or appear impatient and are often disinhibited in social situations. Individuals often struggle to wait their turn, and interrupt or intrude on conversations and activities.

Symptoms of impulsivity from the DSM-5:

  • Often blurts out an answer before a question has been completed.
  • Often has trouble waiting his/her turn.
  • Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g. butts into conversations or games).
