A pilot study is a pre-test of the questionnaire - it evaluates under real circumstance how the questionnaire will work.
Even with the best will in the world - authors can bias or lead respondents. A good pilot study will review questions', format, sequencing and instruction and also evaluate any investigators. This will ensure the questionnaire gets answers to the authors’ research questions.
