Accuracy table

Information on the accuracy of a diagnostic test can be put into a table. Disease presence or absence must be determined by some means and this is usually called the 'gold' or 'reference' standard.

Disease present Disease absent
Test positive True positive False positive
Test negative False negative True negative
Total TP + FN FP + TN

Sensitivity (the proportion of patients with disease who have a positive test) = true positive divided by true positive plus false negative.

Sensitivity = TP/(TP + FN)

Specificity (the proportion of patients without the disease who have a negative result) = true negative divided by true negative plus false positive.

Specificity = TN/(TN + FP)

Please drag and drop the correct definition into each box below.

Sensitivity = TP/ (TP + FN) =

  • the proportion of patients with disease who have a positive test

Specificity = TN/ (TN + FP) =

  • the proportion of patients without the disease who have a negative test
  • the proportion of patients with disease who have a positive test
  • the proportion of patients without the disease who have a negative test
