Types of self-harm - Activity
There are many different ways people can intentionally harm themselves. It can be transient and happen once, occasionally as a problem arises or it may be part of a longer-term pattern of behaviour and occur more regularly. The methods of self-harm can be divided into two broad groups:
1. Self-poisoning and 2. Self-injury.
Activity: Place the main ways children and young people self-harm into the two different categories.(Only the correct selection will stick).
Self-poisoning
- Inhaling glue, lighter fuel or petrol
- Ingesting recreational or illicit drugs
- Misusing Alcohol
- Poisoning with tablets (taking an overdose)
Self-injury
- Cutting or scratching the skin (either on the arm, leg, back, or abdomen)
- Burning (physically i.e. using a cigarette, or chemically i.e. using a caustic agent)
- Over-rubbing the skin causing a friction-burn
- Scalding the skin
- Punching or hitting oneself
- Scrubbing with abrasives, such as bleach
- Biting
