Types of self-harm - Activity

There are many different ways people can intentionally harm themselves. It can be transient and happen once, occasionally as a problem arises or it may be part of a longer-term pattern of behaviour and occur more regularly. The methods of self-harm can be divided into two broad groups:
1. Self-poisoning and 2. Self-injury.

Activity: Place the main ways children and young people self-harm into the two different categories.(Only the correct selection will stick).

Self-poisoning

  • Inhaling glue, lighter fuel or petrol
  • Ingesting recreational or illicit drugs
  • Misusing Alcohol
  • Poisoning with tablets (taking an overdose)

Self-injury

  • Cutting or scratching the skin (either on the arm, leg, back, or abdomen)
  • Burning (physically i.e. using a cigarette, or chemically i.e. using a caustic agent)
  • Over-rubbing the skin causing a friction-burn
  • Scalding the skin
  • Punching or hitting oneself
  • Scrubbing with abrasives, such as bleach
  • Biting
  • Cutting or scratching the skin
