Factors affecting healing

The following factors can affect the healing of chronic wounds:

  • Long term conditions such as diabetes or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
  • Medication such as steroids or diuretics.
  • Reduction in tissue oxygenation eg peripheral vascular disease, smoking.
  • Poor nutritional state.
  • Presence of infection.
  • Older age.
  • Socioeconomic issues affecting care - ability to pay for prescriptions, accessing transport for care.

Psychological issues should also be taken into account - do people encountering anxiety heal wounds as quickly?
