Filing for a patent?

A person can file their application for a patent in one or multiple countries.  If granted, the patent will be legally binding in the country where the application was approved. If you have a US patent for an invention, this does not mean you have patent protection in Japan or the United Kingdom; a US patent is only effective in the US.

One can also apply for a European patent that, if granted, will be effective in the Member States designated by the applicant. For example, an inventor could apply for a European patent that would only be effective in Germany, Austria and Belgium, because those are the countries in which he or she plans to manufacture and market their invention.

Arnold’s invention was patented in the US, Europe and Japan.
