Preparing for Interviews in Healthcare
11. Preparation – Competency questions 3
Although Rachel gave some really good answers, we felt that Gemma did even better. Click each candidate to see feedback on their responses.
Candidate One (Rachel) Response Feedback:
Rachel has structured her response using the STAR technique which makes it easy to understand. She could be more specific about how patient-care was compromised on that particular occasion i.e. patients having to wait longer than normal to be seen, as this part of her answer is a bit general. However, her answer shows a drive and commitment to personal development, to patient care and a reflective approach towards learning. Therefore her response is a good response.
Candidate Two (Gemma) Response Feedback:
Gemma has also followed the STAR technique which makes her answer really effective in describing the challenge she faced and how she took the time to reflect on her approach to the challenge, giving specific examples of the steps she took as well as the changes she was able to influence, evidencing a number of key skills in the process. What makes Gemma’s answer excel is the self-reflection she has carried out throughout the example, the clear example of the result (bed removed) and the learning she plans to take forward as a practising mid-wife. Therefore her response is an excellent response.
