1. Introduction

Researchers have to make certain assumptions about the world they are going to investigate in terms of what can be discovered and what is knowable and the philosophical assumptions that underpin this position. These are known as research paradigms.

You may be familiar with the two traditional paradigms known as positivism and interpretivism, but this resource will look at a third, common paradigm in health sciences research, known as pragmatism. We will explore what is meant by the term pragmatism, the types of methodologies that underpin it and how you might apply those to your research area.
