4. What’s in a name?
The terms used to describe gender based violence sometimes overlap which can be confusing. Have a look at these definitions that should help you to understand some of the terms. Select each door to discover all six definitions.
Any act of gender based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women and girls.
Violence between family members including intimate partners.
Abuse and intimidation between people who are or have been, part of the same family/household, including (but not limited to) intimate partners.
Abuse and intimidation between people who are or have been in an intimate relationship.
The practice of partly or fully removing the external genitalia of women or girls for non-medical reasons. Female genital mutilation (FGM) has no health benefits and is a violation of human rights. FGM is usually motivated by cultural or social beliefs, although no religious texts have prescribed the practice.
