Glossary of Terms & Abbreviations Relating to Maternity/Paternity/Shared Parental Leave/Adoption

 
AbbreviationsTerms
Adopter Refers to the designated primary parent in an adopting couple
Adoption Leave Refers to leave taken by a designated primary parent adopting a child
AML Additional Maternity Leave (follows OML and can be for up to next 26 weeks of maternity leave)             
APL Additional Paternity Leave (replaced by Shared Parental Leave from 5 April 2015)             
ASPP Additional Statutory Paternity Pay (replaced by Shared Parental Pay from 5 April 2015)
Blocks of Leave For SPL, you can book up to three blocks of leave, 8 weeks' notice must be given before each block can be taken             
Continuous Leave A period of leave that is taken in one block eg four weeks             
Curtailment Mother/main carer for adoption notifies employer that they wish to end maternity/adoption leave early
Discontinuous Leave A period of leave that is arranged around weeks where an employee will return to work, eg an arrangement where an employee will work every other week for a period of 3 months
EWC Expected Week of Childbirth
KIT Keeping in Touch Days during maternity or adoption leave
LEL Lower Earnings Limit
MA Maternity Allowance
MATB1 Form issued by midwife to confirm EWC after 20th week of pregnancy             
Match When an adopter is approved to adopt a named child or children
Maternity Leave Refers to leave taken by a birth mother
Mother Refers to birth mother
NIC National Insurance Contributions
OML Ordinary Maternity Leave
OMP Ordinary Maternity Pay
OPL Ordinary Paternity Leave (supports fathers/partners/civil partner to be present at the birth of the child)
Parents Refers to one of two, or both people who will share the main responsibility for the child's upbringing (and who may be the mother, the father, or the mother's partner if not the father, or adoptive parents)
Partner Refers to the child's father or the mother's/main adopter's partner, eg spouse, civil or long-term partner, but who is not her relative, ie child/sibling etc
Qualifying Week For maternity pay, this is the week before the 15th week before EWC, ie when a woman is approximately 25 weeks pregnant

RTW Return to Work             
SAP Statutory Adoption Pay - provided by the State, paid by the employer and administered through HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)
ShPP Shared Parental Pay             
SMP Statutory Maternity Pay - provided by the State, paid by the employer and administered through HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)

Surrogacy A surrogacy arrangement or surrogacy agreement is the carrying of a pregnancy for intended parents
Unpaid Parental Leave Separate to SPL, entitles employees to take up to 18 weeks unpaid leave to look after their child
