Assistant Professor in Roman History, Faculty of Arts
I arrived at Nottingham in September 2018. Before that, I did my undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Oxford, where I was also a Fellow by Examination at All Souls College.
I will be in research leave in the Spring Semester of the 2024/2025 academic year.

I enjoy teaching a wide range of topics across the history of the ancient world. My current and upcoming teaching includes Latin language and a module on the fourth-century Roman Empire. In the past, I have also taught Greek, as well as our first-year introduction to ancient history, special subject on Francia in the age of Clovis and Gregory of Tours, and modules on Britain in the Later Roman Empire, the emperor Justinian, and ancient narratives.
I am an historian of the later Roman Empire and late antiquity more generally. I wrote my doctoral thesis on the Roman Empire under Constantine, his sons, and successors, with a particular focus on Constantius II and Julian the Apostate. I have recently published a major book on the lost history of Sextus Aurelius Victor (written with Dr Justin Stover at the University of Edinburgh). I also work on late-antique onomastics, late-antique letters and letter collections, and the manuscripts and transmission of late-Latin texts.
