Plutarch & Sparta colloquium

Date(s)
Tuesday 31st March 2015 (10:30-18:00)
Description

Plutarch is a major source for Sparta, and has played a uniquely significant role in shaping both popular and scholarly understanding of Spartan society. At the same time, Sparta and Spartans occupy a privileged position within Plutarch’s work, as an exceptional Greek culture which provides a rich canvas for Plutarch’s thought and literary craft.

In recognition of the fundamental interconnection of Plutarch and Sparta, and in promotion of new research in this area, the University of Nottingham, in association with the Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies, will host a colloquium bringing together expert scholars from both fields to explore how historical and literary specialists can learn from each other.

The colloquium will include seven papers exploring diverse aspects of Plutarch’s use of Sparta and Spartan history’s debt to Plutarch, within the far-from-Spartan surroundings of Nottingham’s University Park campus - see the full programme details.

The cost, including lunch and refreshments, is £30 per person. If you would like stay for dinner, it will be a further £20. We strongly encourage postgraduate students to attend and, through the generosity of the Classical Association, are able to offer some bursaries. For more details and to register for the colloquium, please contact Dr Philip Davies.
