Dr Julie Daujat, Department of Archaeology, has been awarded a prestigious Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship to further her research. Their project is called: 'Fallow deer in Western Eurasia: bio-cultural history and conservation policy'.
Project outline:
Fallow deer have a special relationship with humans in Western Eurasia, evidenced by their deliberate and repeated translocation and management from as early as the Neolithic. Research into the fossil remains of the two subspecies has traditionally been limited in scope and scale, focusing upon one subspecies or the other. This project will combine and apply new cutting-edge bioarchaeological techniques to transform our understanding of culture-contact in Western Eurasia through fallow deer and offer new insights from which to build modern deer conservation policies.
