Dr Carl Buckland, Lecturer in the Department of Classics, talks about the many Hollywood films on classical subjects coming out this year. His interview, broadcast Easter weekend on the BBC, explores the impactthat Clash of the Titans and similar films, have on classics departments, and how classical topics impact on our modern world.
Stories based on classical myths and legends to make it on to cinema or TV screens this year include Clash of the Titans; Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief; a remake of the true story of the Roman general Mark Antony and Egypt's Queen Cleopatra; Centurion and Eagle of the Ninth, the story of Roman soldiers dealing with drizzle, mist and rebellious Celts in ancient Britain; and Ben Hur.
