Prof Patrick Finglass’ new critical edition of the poems of Stesichorus has just been published by Cambridge University Press.
Accompanied by a detailed introduction from Prof Finglass, and a commentary by him and Associate Professor Malcolm Davies of St John’s College (Oxford) this is the first full-scale study of some of the finest lyric poetry to have survived from the ancient world.
Stesichorus’ narratives vividly recreate the most dramatic episodes of Greek myth – including the labours of Heracles, the sack of Troy, the vengeance of Orestes – and are available today thanks to the discovery of ancient manuscripts long buried in the sands of Egypt!
This book will be followed by a collection of essays Stesichorus in Context, edited by Prof Finglass and Dr Adrian Kelly of Balliol College (Oxford), which contains essays on Stesichorus by leading classical scholars, and is due to be published in autumn 2015, again by Cambridge University Press.
Prof Finglass’ work on both books was funded by the award of a Research Fellowship by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
