Stesichorus in Context: new book co-edited by Patrick Finglass

The sixth-century BC Greek poet Stesichorus was highly esteemed in the ancient world, but by about AD 400 his works were almost completely lost. Recently, the recovery of substantial amounts of his poetry has allowed a reassessment of his significance.

In this book, essays by leading scholars analyse different aspects of his work including:

  • the relationship between Stesichorus and epic, particularly his response to the Homeric poems
  • his narrative technique and handling of erotic themes
  • his influence and reception in different eras such as fifth-century Athens, in Hellenistic scholarship and poetry, during the Renaissance and in poetry today

This volume, the first dedicated to this author, demonstrates the extraordinary creativity and continuing vitality of the poet from Himera.
