David Stuttard to deliver talk on 'Evolving Greek Tragedy'

On Tuesday 12 December (5pm, A3 Humanities), theatre director David Stuttard, founder of the Actors of Dionysus, will be the guest speaker at the Classics Research Workshop.

The Actors of Dionysus is a Brighton-based charity dedicated to bringing contemporary productions of Greek tragedy to a broad general audience, performing in schools and community centres as well as theatres. They visited Lakeside Arts recently with a futuristic take on Sophocles’ Antigone.

Under the title ‘Evolving Greek Tragedy’, in conversation with Dr Lynn Fotheringham (Director of CADRE), David will discuss the process of sharing this ancient art form with modern audiences, drawing on the 25 years of the company. He will cover issues of translation and staging as well as the ways in which working in Graeco-Roman theatres has informed his understanding of the plays. The focus will mainly be on Euripides’ Trojan Women (and David’s reconstruction of the trilogy that play belonged to), Sophocles’ Antigone, and there may be time for Aristophanes’ Lysistrata for comic relief.
