Biography

I read my undergraduate in Classical Archaeology and Classical Civilisation (1:1) at University College London (UCL) and subsequently obtained an MPhil in Classical Archaeology with Distinction from Magdalen College, University of Oxford. I completed an MRes in Ancient History at the University of Birmingham prior to conducting a PhD at the University of Edinburgh (2019-2024).

I have participated in archaeological excavations in Italy, Israel-Palestine and across the UK. I completed an intensive Russian Language course at Moscow State University in 2017, and, during my doctorate, undertook a funded research trip to Warsaw, Poland (Oct-Nov 2022).

I have tutored on a range of Archaeology, Ancient History, and Classics courses at the Universities of Birmingham, Edinburgh, and now Nottingham and was awarded Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in February 2022.

Expertise Summary

I am a specialist in the northern Black Sea coast in antiquity. My doctoral thesis focused on the site of Olbia (modern Parutyne, Ukraine) on the northern Black Sea coast, specifically the use of cultural memory in the 'Post-Getic' revival of the city in the early centuries AD.

Research Summary

Current research interests

My research interests include: Greek communities in the northern Black Sea littoral in antiquity; Sarmatians and nomadic communities in antiquity; hybridity in visual culture; numismatics, and othered communities in the ancient world and subsequent historiography.

Former research projects of mine have focused on Transtiberim in the urban landscape; homelessness in Early Imperial Rome, and the representations of disability in Hellenistic art.

Knowledge exchange

As a member of the Pandemic Perspectives group, which examines the impact of the Pandemic on various disciplines, I helped organise a conference in April 2021, which was published, with funding from the University of Edinburgh Student-Led Initiative Fund and M4C AHRC, in December 2022: https://ubiquityproceedings.com/2/volume/2/issue/1. I also organised a One-Day Workshop with The Caucasus Through Time Network in December 2021 on the classical period in the region, while in December 2023 I co-chaired 'The Afterlife of the Greco-Persian War' conference in Kyoto University, Japan.

In 2024/25, I am convening Understanding the Past I: Introduction to Archaeology, in addition to teaching on Interpreting Ancient Art and Archaeology, Interpreting Ancient History, Studying Classical Scholarship, Great Discoveries in Archaeology, Understanding the Past II: Reading the Landscape, and Rome to Revolution: Historical Archaeology of Britain.
