The undergraduate journey

Our clear progression pathway guides you through all stages of your degree, emphasising both continuity and professional development, supported by core modules:

Year one – 'Curiosity'

Year one modules foster your curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject by exploring the breadth of possibilities of studying history at Nottingham, and providing the foundational knowledge, concepts and skills required through the rest of your degree.

The core 'Discovering History' module aids your transition to university-level study, introducing different methods and approaches and encouraging students to work both independently and collaboratively.

Year two – 'Critique'

Year two modules encourage you not only to understand the past but to think critically about it, interrogating the ways in which the past has been presented.

The core 'Interpreting History' module focuses on the craft of the historian and the production of historical scholarship. whilst also allowing you to develop your own, increasingly independent research pathways.

Year three – 'Curation'

Year three modules allow you to curate your own interpretations of the past, and to really make the degree your own.

The core 'History Special Subject' allows you to work on a specific area of staff specialism, an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of historical research, working with primary sources and the most contemporary scholarship, complementing the independent research underpinning your dissertation.
