Letter from Hong Kong

All Nottingham Music students have the opportunity to study abroad for the first half of their second year. Nottingham is one of only four UK universities to belong to Universitas 21, a global network of universities with members in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and other exciting destinations. Two of our second years are currently studying at partner institutions in Hong Kong and Australia.

Music student Nicholas Goode has sent this report on his experiences in Hong Kong:

‘I chose to study abroad at the University of Hong Kong for a semester in my second year. Though I am only halfway through my undergraduate studies, I already think it might turn out to be the best decision I will have made whilst at university. Hong Kong is simply astounding; I have never been anywhere like it in my life. I feel that I have learned more in the last three months than in as many years.

Studying at an Asian university has given me a very different outlook towards my undergrad education. I chose courses in Chinese music history and Mandarin, and although they are quite challenging for a Westerner, they are also incredibly rewarding: I will certainly continue to study both once I get back to Nottingham.

I would recommend all students to take up the opportunity to go on exchange, wherever they might like to go. I have made friends from all over the world and the experience has given me a broader, more global approach to life.’
