Composition and Music Production students collaborate on new score for classic film

A new score to accompany Dziga Vertov's classic 1929 film Man with a Movie Camera has been premiered by students in the Djanogly Recital Hall. The project was the outcome of the work of students on two separate modules, 'Composing for Voice, Theatre and Moving Image' and 'Music Production'. Working under the guidance of Dr Elizabeth Kelly and Simon Paterson, the students composed, performed and recorded the new soundtrack to the silent film, which was then performed at a public lunchtime concert in May.

Teams of students were assigned to different scenes from the film, developing valuable collaborative as well as creative skills. The project is part of a longer-term initiative to grow contemporary creative activity in the department, including an expansion of our music technology facilities and curriculum, and our new concert series NottFAR showcasing creative research in the department.

Watch the final 'Apotheosis' scene from the film.
