Dr Hannah Marie Robbins joins the Department of Music
We're very pleased to announce that Dr Hannah Marie Robbins will be joining us from September as an Assistant Professor in Music and has kindly provided a brief introduction to their fascinating research and interests:
"I am a musicologist, specialising in American popular music, and especially the Broadway and Hollywood musical. My work focuses on musical theatre and its cultural context. I am particularly interested in the role of female and Black creatives in the 1940-50s. My research on Cole Porter’s hit musical Kiss Me, Kate (1948)has identified it as one few contemporary shows in which Black performers were given equal billing to their white counterparts, leading the way for unprecedented multi-racial casting when the musicalopened in Europe.
I am looking forward to joining the Department of Music as an Assistant Professor, teaching on pop music, theatre and race, and contributing to the Centre for Music on Stage and Screen (MOSS). I am currently working on a monograph about Kiss Me, Kate for Oxford University Press and an article about censoring the American musical in on the British stage. Future projects include publications on Cole Porter’s life in Paris, on adapting Disney’s Frozen for stage, and on approaching Lena Horne’s film career at MGM (1942-1956)."
