Benefits

 

Generous annual leave entitlement 

The university’s generous annual leave entitlement provides colleagues with an enhanced annual leave package as follows:   

  • At job level 1-3, you will be entitled to 27 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays and an additional 5 university closure days equating to a total of 40 days

  • At job level 4-7, you will be entitled to 30 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays, plus 5 university closure days equating to a total of 43 days.

Additional annual leave entitlement 

We know that there may be times when you need extra days away from work and we have an annual leave purchase scheme to support this currently giving you the opportunity to purchase up to 5 additional days annual leave entitlement each year (subject to approval and calculated pro rata for part-time colleagues).

Pay

The university offers competitive pay packages and pay progression opportunities within salary bands.

To recognise performance, staff will move up by one increment on our pay scales (below the standard max) on an annual basis. With our Nottingham Reward Scheme, you could be rewarded for the great job you do by being nominated for vouchers and financial bonuses. In addition, salaries are reviewed annually (levels 1-3 roles are reviewed locally via joint trade unions and levels 4 and above roles are reviewed through national UCEA negotiations), which is often referred to as the cost-of-living pay award.

 

Excellent maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave schemes 

Employees who have completed 52 consecutive weeks or more of service may qualify for our Enhanced University Adoption, Maternity and Shared Parental Leave pay, encompassing 26 weeks on full pay. The university also offers two weeks of Paternity Leave on full pay for employees with 12 months or more of service.  

 

Enhanced pension schemes 

When joining the University of Nottingham, you will automatically be enrolled onto a pension scheme, depending on your job level. 

  • At level 1-3, you will be entitled to access the CRSP scheme (3-5% employee contribution and 6-10% employer contribution).
  • At level 4-7, you will be entitled to the USS Scheme (6.1% employee contribution plus 14.5% employer contribution).

Wellbeing

 

Agile working 

We recognise that flexibility can help improve your work-life balance, therefore many of our roles offer agile working arrangements with a blended approach of office and home working. Our Agile working framework addresses informal, day-to-day flexibility in our work practices. This replaces the previous Hybrid Working Guidance, which was tailored to the specific circumstances of the pandemic.

Flexible working

All employees have a day-one right to request flexible working. The university believes that flexible working enhances staff motivation and accommodates the diverse needs and preferences of employees by promoting better work-life balance and increasing job satisfaction. We encourage candidates to engage in conversations about their specific needs and preferences with the recruiting manager at the offer stage.

 

Private medical insurance

We offer a comprehensive voluntary Private medical insurance at a specially discounted price by UoN, part of the AXA group. Private Medical Insurance is designed to give you peace of mind - it offers quick access to eligible health treatment; from seeing a specialist for diagnosis right up to receiving appropriate care during a stay in hospital. All policies have access to the Doctor@Hand service where you can see a GP when it suits you 24/7, including access to ‘Hussle’ which offers a range of gym membership discounts.

Health cash plan

As a member of staff, you can take advantage of Westfield Health’s Health Cash Plan at a special rate which is 20% cheaper than if you purchased the same cover yourself. The plan enables you to claim money back towards essential health costs including dental check-ups & treatment, contact lenses, glasses, surgery, therapy treatments and more.

 

Employee Assistance Programme 

The university provides an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which is an independent, free and confidential for both emotional and practical support. Support is available for whatever issues you might be facing, including work stress, depression, marriage and relationship issues, legal concerns, coping with change, parenting issues, financial problems, health issues and much more.

Onsite doctors and dentists 

You may be able to benefit an onsite doctor and dentist depending on your residential address. We have a health centre on the University Park campus that is accessible to all staff which includes a doctors, dentist and Boots Pharmacy for vaccination and other services.

 

Legal & General care concierge support 

Our Legal and General (L&G) pension providers offer unlimited free resources, tools, guidance and expert information to all university staff members in relation to supporting a loved one with later life care, including a dedicated telephone line, care navigation assistant and care cost calculator.

Health and fitness facilities on site

As an employee, you’ll have access to ‘Staff Active’ which enables you to take advantage of the university’s onsite health and fitness facilities, sports clubs and exercise classes which is a great opportunity to meet new people, keep fit and have fun. New permanent employees can claim a 30-day free trial of the staff sport and fitness membership and all colleagues can access the ‘UoN Moves App’ where you can earn points through a range of challenges to suit your ability level.

The Employee Hub is a single location providing you with information, guidance and easy access to everything relating to employee benefits, recognition, discounts, wellbeing and more. As a member of staff, you have exclusive access to Pluxee Discounts which includes 1000’s of discounts across various big-name retailers including supermarkets, travel, holidays, food and drink, entertainment, fashion, fitness (including gym memberships) and more.

As an employee in the education sector, you will be eligible to purchase a TOTUM card (previously known as NUS card) which enables you to access 100’s more discounts and offers.

University hopper bus

Our free regular bus services connect our main University Park Campus to our other campuses at Jubilee, Sutton Bonington and King's Meadow campuses, and the Royal Derby Hospital. Staff and students travelling to Nottingham City Hospital are also able to travel free of charge on Medilink - simply show your university ID card. Car share scheme

The university has teamed up with Liftshare the UK's largest car sharing network to provide a car share scheme specifically for University of Nottingham staff. You can register for free and search for other university staff to share your journey with and sign up as a passenger or driver. Cycle to work scheme

The university’s Cycle to Work Scheme allows colleagues to purchase a brand-new bike and safety accessories with a value of up to £4,000 through salary sacrifice which enables you to spread the total cost over a 12-month period whilst making savings on Tax and National Insurance. The scheme is hosted by the University’s employee benefit platform provider who work alongside Halfords, Tredz and over 900 independent bike shops across the UK meaning that you have a wide range of bike brands and accessories to choose from. 

 

Car leasing scheme 

The university partners with Tusker, the UK’s leading salary sacrifice car provider. If you are thinking of getting a new car, you can apply for this scheme via the Employee Hub where we’ll arrange for a fixed monthly amount to be deducted from your gross salary. In return, you’ll have access to the use of a brand-new electric vehicle or ultra-low emission vehicle, including fully comprehensive motor insurance for you and your domestic partner, no quibble replacement tyres, full RAC breakdown cover, a 24-hour driver support line and more.

Discounted travel

The university has teamed up with local transport operators to offer employees the opportunity to purchase bus, tram and rail passes at discounted rates and pay for them via monthly salary deductions. More information can be found here.

We have many courses, online resources and learning opportunities facilitated by our internal Learning and Development team and partners across the organisation, helping you develop your skills both professionally and personally and to support your career ambitions.

Nottingham Reward Scheme (NRS)

The university aims to ensure that staff are rewarded and recognised for excellent performance and contribution to the university that goes above and beyond normal expectations. Long service awards

Long Service Awards are given to any member of staff who has completed 25 and 40 years' continuous service with the university. Staff retiring from the university at the age of 65+ with 25 year’s service or more are also awarded.  

 

Lord Dearing Awards

The Lord Dearing Award Scheme has, since 1999, recognised the outstanding achievements of University of Nottingham staff in enhancing the student experience, teaching and learning, and/or learning support. Any staff member, team or faculty School or Department that you believe has made a significant impact on the student experience or outcomes (broadly defined), and/or demonstrated substantial achievements (impact) in / through teaching and learning or the support of learning.

 

Vice-Chancellor's Medal

Vice-Chancellor’s Medals are awarded once a year to staff, students and associates who have made an invaluable contribution to university life. The aim of the award is to recognise exceptional activity which embodies the values of the university and its civic responsibilities. Any and all staff and students from across the university's UK, Malaysia and China campuses are eligible for nomination. 

 

Professional Services Awards

The Professional Services Awards were first established in 2022 as a way for the university community to celebrate the achievements, hard work and dedication of Professional Services colleagues who help keep the university going.
