Prof. Liz Sockett

Life Science's 'Living antibiotic' pioneer elected Fellow of Royal Society

Recently, Life Science's very own Prof. Liz Sockett became the first of the University of Nottingham's female staff to be elected a fellow of the Royal Society.  Liz is one of fifty eminent scientists from across the world to be elected to the prestigious Society this year. She follows in the footsteps of many other prominent Nottingham Fellows including Professor of Chemistry Martyn Poliakoff and the late Professor Bryan Clarke.

Liz has made her name leading what she describes as her ‘wonderful research group’ in the global fight against antibiotic resistance through their work on the predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus. These bacteria act like ‘living antibiotics’ as they naturally invade and destroy pathogenic superbugs like Klebsiella, E. coli, and Salmonella which cause increasingly hard to treat infections.

You can read more about Liz, her story, and work at the official press release.
