Biography of Colonel Thomas Blackborne Hildyard (1788-1830)

Thomas was the eldest son of Colonel Thomas Thoroton , and inherited the Flintham and part of the Screveton estate in 1813. In 1815 Thomas married Anne Catherine Whyte (1784-1853), niece and heiress of Sir Robert D'Arcy Hildyard, 4th Baronet (1744-1814), of Winestead and Sedbury, Yorkshire, thereby acquiring Winestead Hall (Red Hall) and extensive estates in Yorkshire. Thomas took the surname Hildyard under the terms of the 4th Baronet's will.

Thomas was a colonel in the Coldstream Guards, and served as High Sheriff of Nottingham in 1817, but is best known for his expenditure on land and renovations. In 1824, following the death of his grandmother Roosilia Thoroton, he purchased Screveton Hall and the remaining parts of the 'unsettled estate' which his grandfather had given to other members of the family. He demolished Screveton Hall, and in 1827 exchanged its site for land owned by the rector of Screveton. An extension to Flintham Hall by Lewis Wyatt was completed in 1829, and Colonel Hildyard was also responsible for rebuilding Flintham Church. He had begun to make arrangements for the sale of Lincolnshire estates inherited from Mary Hutton, a cousin by marriage of the Bowes family, in the late 1820s. However, the Screveton and Flintham estates were already mortgaged, and his purchase of further land at Winestead just before his premature death in 1830 led to financial problems for his descendants.
