Title: Higher Gauge Theory and M5-branes: An Obstacle Course

Abstract: I will discuss the mathematics underlying higher gauge theories with an eye towards the potential future construction of an M5-brane model. Along the way, we will encounter several obstacles, such as higher-dimensional parallel transport and self-dual curvature forms which I will show how to overcome. To make contact with more conventional theories, I show that the mathematics we developed also provides a natural understanding of the tensor hierarchies in gauged supergravities.
