In a joint venture between the School of Computer Science and the School of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Nottingham, a new BSc in Data Science has just been launched and is now accepting applications via UCAS for students starting from September 2015. The course, one of the first of its kind in this exciting new field contains an even split between Mathematics and Computer Science taught modules, with particular emphasis on those containing statistical and data analytical methods.
Computer-based systems now generate huge volumes of data almost continuously and large data sets have become the norm in a wide variety of disciplines and applications. From natural science, through to the business, finance and retail sectors, as well as social networking sites and mobile devices.
While it represents a phenomenal resource, the rapid emergence of big data brings challenges and there is now an urgent need for graduates skilled in the sophisticated mathematical and computational techniques required for large-scale data analysis.
In response to this need, the new discipline of data science is emerging at the interface between computer science and statistics, developing data scientists fit to take advantage of the growing opportunities in addressing these data skill demands.
Many more details, including the standard A-level offer, can be found on the Data Science course information page.
