Undergraduate Research & Teaching Expo 2015
Every year we host some of our best undergraduate students over the summer to engage in internship projects related to research and teaching. These internships are funded by various bursary schemes (including external sources such as London Mathematical Society (LMS), Wellcome Trust, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Sigma, and internal sources such as school funding). This gives motivated students an excellent opportunity to be involved first-hand in academic activities, and a good portion of these students later apply for PhDs with us.
This year, for the first time, Dr Gerardo Adesso organised an event where the students on internship projects would have an opportunity to present their work and results to the school. This event, named The Undergraduate Research & Teaching Expo, took place in the Maths Building Atrium on Wednesday 21 October where each student produced a poster to showcase their project. Refreshments were provided by the school.
The event was very well attended by students and academics alike and the tea and cakes didn't last long! Gerardo praised the interns, "[they] did a really fantastic job and the feedback was extremely positive".
Hannah Pybus who presented at the event says "thank you so much for the event and organisation; it was a fantastic opportunity and experience."
Laurence Cook, who also showcased his work, explains "I thoroughly enjoyed the expo thank you so much for organising it. It's a great experience to discuss in job applications and the chance to experience a professional poster session was one I am very grateful for. The attendance was really high and everyone there showed great interest in the projects, and even after 3 hours there was still people there. Thanks again".
Well done to all involved!
