About the Centre
Nanofabrication Nottingham brings together the cleanrooms in the nmRC and the School of Physics and Astronomy. Its aim is to provide micro- and nanofabrication services to the entire university community and beyond. We can train users in a wide range of nanofabrication techniques allowing them to perform their own fabrication. We are also happy to perform fabrication for users from the early design stage right the way through to the final fabrication and packaging.
Accessing the nanofabrication facilities
The procedure for accessing the nanofabrication facilities depends on what you are fabricating and how much work you are wanting to do. We offer 3 tiers for fabricating your samples, they are:
- Tier 1: We perform the fabrication for you. This is ideal if you are only wanted a limited number of samples made or if you are not interested in learning nanofabrication. We will discuss the project with you, come up with a fabrication plan and carry out the work. We recommend this level for external work.
- Tier 2: We help you with the fabrication. This is ideal if you want to perform the fabrication yourself but need help with some of the more complicated steps. We will provide training in instrumentation such as spin coaters, thermal evaporators and wet etching but will carry out steps such as EBL, PECVD or dry etching. You are welcome to observe these steps.
- Tier 3: You do everything. This is ideal if you want to do all the fabrication steps and you have time to be trained. We will train you on all the equipment needed to make your devices and support you in using these in the future. Given the time taken to perform the training on some equipment we only recommend this for frequent users.
Whatever tier you choose the first step will be to fill out a nanofabrication request form. External users should use this form. Once you have filled this out, we will contact you with details on what equipment you need to be trained on and if you will be working in the nmRC, Physics and Astronomy, or both and what the next steps are.

Access and finding the nmRC
The Centre is a multi-disciplinary facility, and we welcome enquiries from within the University of Nottingham, the wider academic community, and from industry.
Having previously been hosted in the Physics Building from 2007 to 2015, the Centre has now moved to the Cripps South building (building 53) on the University Park campus (formerly the Cripps Computing Centre) - more directions and maps can be found here.
For all general enquiries about access to nmRC facilities, including cost estimates, please contact Dr Gemma Skelton.
The nmRC is now based at the Cripps South Building, University Park, Nottingham.
