My work focuses on the intersection of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ambitions of the space sector (commercial and public) to create permanent human communities on the Moon, Mars, and beyond. I lead the 'Slavery-Free Mars' initiative, which focuses on SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and lays out a plan for how we can achieve this on Earth as well as ingraining many SDGs into the fabric of the societies we build in space. Other recent research has focused on community-level engagements to end modern slavery, including initiatives to support survivors of modern slavery around the world. I undertook the first research project to define 'freedom from modern slavery' and have co-created two personal development programmes for survivors. My academic and professional areas of expertise are, broadly, applied political theory and applied human rights research. I have an MA in human values and global ethics (King's College London) and a PhD in politics and contemporary history (anti-slavery) (University of Nottingham). In addition to my academic career, I have spent extensive time working in and with the not-for-profit and public sectors.

I have a BA in journalism and completed multiple practicals and placements during that course. In a previous role I also liaised between my previous institution's CEO and marketing and communications team to manage media engagements; this involved writing copy. More recently, I have completed a media training day at the University of Nottingham and have engaged with journalists regarding my research at sector-wide events such as the International Astronautical Congress.
