Expertise summary

Italian history, especially the late 18th to early 20th centuries (with special emphasis on Italian unfication and national identity). The history of Venice since the fall of the Venetian Republic. The historiography of the Venetian Republic. Italy during the Second World War. Machiavelli.

Dr Laven has taken part in numerous media opportunities including BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 (Night Waves in 2003 and 2007). He was a regular contributor on Making History between 2006 and 2010 and featured on Misha Glenny’s The Alps in 2010 and Misha Glenny’s The Invention of Italy. In addition, he was involved in Turner in Venice for Channel 5 in 2003 and Venice for the BBC Learning Zone in 2001. In 2011 he contributed an article for Il messagero(Rome's leading newspaper).
