Expertise summary
Nanoscience. The properties of polymers and how making very small structures from them affect their mechanical properties. Nanotechnology involving proteins and other biological molecules.
James studies the properties of thin films and surfaces of soft materials - including plastics/polymers, biological materials as well as nanoparticle solutions and suspensions.
He also has interests in using the vibrations of small liquid droplets as a probe of their material properties (e.g. surface tension, viscosity and elasticity).
More recently, James has developed a programme of research aimed at using contact imaging techniques to acquire images of shoeprints and fingerprints for forensic applications.
