The University of Nottingham has climbed four places in the Good University Guide 2012, published by The Times.
The latest Guide, published on June 23rd, describes Nottingham as ‘the nearest Britain has to a truly global university, with campuses in China and Malaysia modelled on a headquarters that is among the most attractive in Britain’.
Nottingham is also noted for excellence in research, high completion rates, an award-winning campus environment, strong graduate career prospects and ‘consistently good results’ in the National Student Survey.

Nottingham’s rise is reflected in two other league tables published this year – the Complete University Guide and the Guardian University Guide – in which it also moved up the rankings.
The Times Good University Guide ranks 116 UK universities according to eight criteria, including student satisfaction, entry standards, spend on facilities, degree results and job prospects. Nottingham is ranked 16th in the UK this year, up four places on last year. It is ranked sixth according to the universities targeted by the largest number of top employers.
League table rises come in the wake of a string of major successes for Nottingham, including its best-ever score in the National Student Survey (NSS), which measures finalists’ overall level of satisfaction with their degree course and the institution at which they have studied.
The latest QS World Rankings saw Nottingham climb 18 places into the Global Top 75, making it the fastest-rising UK university in the prestigious Top 100.
It was also named ‘Europe’s greenest university’ in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, a league table of the world’s most environmentally-friendly higher education institutions, which ranked Nottingham second in the world overall.
Application figures from UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, show that the University is the third most popular university in the UK with prospective students. More than 49,000 applied to study at Nottingham this year – around nine applicants for each of the 5,500 places available for first-year undergraduates.
An unprecedented surge in interest from potential students has led to the early closure of bookings for one of this year’s Open Days. During the course of Friday June 24 and Saturday June 25, the University will welcome around 32,000 visitors to their three main UK campuses. This figure, up from 23,500 on last year, represents a 30 per cent increase.
John O’Leary, editor of The Times Good University Guide since its launch in 1993, said: “This is a crucial year for anyone making choices about higher education in view of the impending fees rise, and the guide should be a valuable starting point for that process. It goes far beyond the league tables that are its best known feature and includes a wealth of information on universities.”
