Nottingham University Business School at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) is calling for new high-calibre academics to join its Asian campuses success story.
This is an opportunity for 17 individuals to join the Chinese arm of a fast-growing, EQUIS-accredited business school with bases in the UK, China and Malaysia. Around half of the 5,000 students learning in English for University of Nottingham degrees in China study business-related subjects.
Professor, associate professor and assistant professor or lecturer positions are available in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems, international business, marketing, organisational behaviour and strategy. Candidates will also be expected to conduct high-quality research.
Nottingham University Business School in China has an international faculty of 60, coming from over 20 countries, permanently based in Ningbo. It plans to grow to about 90 in the next few years.
Professor Martin Binks, Dean of Nottingham University Business School and Professor of Entrepreneurial Development, sees academic opportunities such as these as among the most exciting the higher education world has to offer.
“Nottingham’s international campuses present a unique opportunity for academic staff to teach and research in a genuinely global environment,” says Professor Binks, who has overall responsibility for the University’s Business Schools in three countries. “We are building a significant international business school based on this University’s strong global foundations.
“The new Dean of Nottingham University Business School in China, Professor Carl Fey, joined us this year from the Stockholm School of Economics, where he helped establish a successful branch campus for executive education in Russia. He is already pursuing ambitious development plans.
“There’s a great appetite for growth and improvement in China, responding to the new realities of doing business there and across South-East Asia. We’re focusing more on executive education and research than in the past and looking for people to join us who share our mission.”
Professor Carl Fey, Dean of Nottingham University Business School China and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences in China, adds: “There are great research possibilities living here in the middle of one of the countries which the world is most interested in, but which is still mysterious to many.
“In addition, we have great students who are very bright and motivated to learn. I am also pushing a greater focus on using interactive teaching methodologies and being innovative in research and teaching. If you would like to help build something great and have a bit impact, you should consider us.”
Internationalisation is a key element of Nottingham’s strategy. The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 calls The University of Nottingham “the embodiment of the modern international university”.
The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) welcomed its first students in September 2000, and the Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education — known as Setara — ranked UNMC among the elite in its latest report.
In 2004, Nottingham became the first foreign university in the world to establish a campus in mainland China, introducing degree programmes taught entirely in English. Its mission is to match Nottingham UK’s strengths in teaching and research to China’s educational priorities and needs, recruiting Chinese undergraduates only from the top division of China’s university entrance exam.
UNNC offers the same high standards of teaching as The University of Nottingham’s UK and Malaysia campuses. All 39,000 students across the three international campuses graduate with the same degrees from The University of Nottingham.
Nottingham University Business School students in China belong to more than 60 student societies. Entrepreneurship is a strong theme. Our Students in Free Enterprise Club, which develops social entrepreneurship projects teaching valuable business skills while helping many people in rural China, came second in the World Cup in LA in 2010.
The University of Nottingham Ningbo China also offers degree programmes in architecture, computer science, English studies, environmental science, a range of engineering subjects, international business and management, international communications, and international studies.
UNNC is located in Ningbo, a dynamic coastal city in the south-east of the country with a population of more than six million people. The Hangzhou Bay Bridge — at 22 miles the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world — means Shanghai is less than three hours away by road.
Since it opened its doors in China, The University of Nottingham’s innovative internationalisation policy has been recognised with a number of prestigious awards including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade; Outward Investor of the Year by the country’s foremost China-Britain trade association; and in the USA an International Business Award for ‘Best New Product or Service’ for its China campus.
Applications for some posts close at the end of September or in early October, with recruitment for others ending at the start of January 2012. Roles may begin on February 1 2012 or on September 1 2012 — but start dates can be negotiated.
The school provides European-level salaries and excellent benefits including an international medical plan, international schooling for children, and a housing allowance.
