New scholarships at The University of Nottingham will help students and staff travel overseas to enhance their learning and research.
Scholarships will provide an international dimension to study or research as part of a £260,000 package of support provided by Santander Universities.
Santander took the opportunity of the opening of a new branch on campus to announce a new agreement supporting students and staff at the University.
Each year for the next three years, 11 awards of £5,000 will be made to staff or students from countries within the Santander Universities’ network, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.
A further 15 mobility scholarships of £1,000 will be available annually, to help enable study or research in one of the countries that make up the Santander Universities’ network.
Luis Juste, Director of Santander Universities UK, visited University Park on February 10th for the official opening of the new branch of the bank in the Portland Building.
Branch Manager Kyle Warman said: “We are delighted to be opening this branch at The University of Nottingham. Santander and Nottingham have been working together since 2008 and this new branch signifies the latest development in our partnership.
“We are committed to serving the communities of students and academic professionals and developing long-term relationships with them.”
Supporting entrepreneurship
Santander Universities will also support and promote entrepreneurship among the student body, with funding for the EnterpriseLab, part of the University’s Institute for Enterprise and Innovation. This will provide prizes for an annual student enterprise competition, and seed funding so that competition winners can begin to develop their ideas.
Additionally, Santander will provide support to Students’ Union volunteering activities over the next three years.

The University of Nottingham launched a partnership with Santander Universities in 2008, to help strengthen research and teaching links with universities in Latin America, Spain and Portugal and to develop a variety of projects within the 'Santander Universities' Global Division scheme.
Santander Universities' purpose is to build long-term partnerships and encourage international co-operation and exchange between universities. Scholarships and research programmes are carried out between the universities in the different countries, encouraging international mobility of UK students, teachers and staff.
Overseas scholarships
Sophia Stanley, a third-year Politics and International Relations student at Nottingham, received a previous Santander scholarship and travelled to Mexico as part of her course.
Sophia said: “My six months spent studying in Mexico has rendered me hopelessly in love with the country: full of colour, spice and some of the most wonderful people I have ever met. The country has so much to offer – ancient Mayan temples rising out of a jungle clearing, colonial towns bursting with culture and past adventures, and golden beaches accompanied by legendary surf break.
“I was lucky enough to be studying in the city of Guadalajara, a vibrant and bustling cosmopolitan city – Mexico’s second largest. With the help of my scholarship I was able to travel far and wide across the country and experience all it had to offer. Additionally I was able to spend two weeks in Cuba after exams. As a politics student it was an amazing opportunity to see a form of Communism in action, the country and its people were amazing.”
The new Santander branch, on C floor of the Portland Building, is open to students, staff and members of the public. The branch will offer exclusive products to students and staff such as preferential mortgage rates for university staff or the availability of student accounts all year round.
Scholarships & Bursaries, and Study Abroad Scholarships, are key projects within the University’s new appeal, Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, which aims to raise £150m to change lives, tackle global issues and shape the future.
